I first became interested in geology while studying a science foundation course with the Open University. A frequent visitor to the Lake District, I began to use some of the geology excursion books listed below. I owe a particular debt to Bryan Lynas, whose Lakeland Rocky Rambles not only threw a clear, bright light on a difficult and complex subject, but crucially encouraged me to examine the rocks for myself and speculate about what I found. I went on to take an MA in Lake District Studies at the Centre for North West Regional Studies (University of Lancaster), the first module of which covered the geology of the area. This excellent course, which is sadly not currently available, led me off at a tangent and I found myself studying woodland at Claife and the medieval deer parks of Westmorland, which was the subject of my final dissertation. Having completed the course, however, I returned to my growing collection of geology books, determined to make sense of them. I visited more of the excursion locations and began to discover a fascinating and beautiful world that despite walking in the Lake District for many years I had somehow managed to overlook.
